Colin C. Schwarzwald graduated in 1997 from the University of Zurich School of Veterinary Medicine. Between 1998 and 2001 he was employed as an assistant veterinarian at the Equine Hospital of the University of Zurich and completed a doctoral thesis to attain the Dr. med. vet. degree. Between 2001 and 2004 he was enrolled in a Large Animal Internal Medicine residency program at The Ohio State University in Columbus, OH, USA. Concurrently, from 2001 to 2006, he also completed a PhD program and conducted several research projects in the field of cardiovascular pharmacology, cardiac electrophysiology, and cardiovascular imaging. He subsequently moved back to the Vetsuisse Faculty of the University of Zurich, where he was employed as a Senior Lecturer in Equine Internal Medicine until 2012. In 2012, he was appointed to a full professorship in Equine Internal Medicine and in 2013 he became the director of the Clinic of Equine Internal Medicine at the Vetsuisse Faculty.

Colin Schwarzwald holds a PhD degree in Veterinary Clinical Sciences and is board-certified in the specialty of Large Animal Internal Medicine in the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM) and in the European College of Equine Internal Medicine (ECEIM).

His academic and clinical interests include large animal and comparative cardiology, with emphasis on echocardiography, cardiac electrophysiology, hemodynamic monitoring, cardiovascular pharmacology, and cardiac biomarkers.

His section is equipped with a high-end echocardiography system suitable for all large and small animal species (GE Vivid 7 and EchoPac Workstation; including tissue Doppler and 2D Strain capabilities), a high-frequency, high-resolution digital imaging platform for preclinical applications in rodents (Vevo 2100, VisualSonics Inc.; including tissue Doppler and 2D Strain capabilities), multiple telemetric and Holter ECG devices (Televet and Spacelabs Sentinel/Pathfinder), two phonocardiography systems, devices for cardiac catheterization and hemodynamic monitoring, intracardiac pacing/cardioversion catheters, an external pacemaker (Medtronic), a device for programmed electrical stimulation (Medtronic), and a Medtronic Lifepak 15 biphasic defibrillator/physiologic monitor.

The current research activities focus on the validation of novel echocardiographic methods (i.e., tissue Doppler imaging, 2D speckle tracking imaging) for assessment of atrial and ventricular function in large animal species (i.e., horses, goats, sheep, calves) and molecular and pharmacologic characterization of cardiac ion channels / receptors in horses. Furthermore, several interdisciplinary collaborations including echocardiographic assessment of cardiac size and function in mice and rat models of human diseases are ongoing.
