Presentation Farhad Hafezi

On August 18, 2017, a new research laboratory under the leadership of CABMM member Prof. Farhad Hafezi was inaugurated at the Roski Eye Institute, University of Southern California. The professor of ophthalmology also heads a quite successful research group on the CABMM Research Platform. The "Laboratory for Ocular Cell Biology & Corneal Biomechanics" in Los Angeles and the "Ocular Cell Biology Group" in Zurich are now working synergistically on several clinical and experimental research projects in the fields of human cornea and sclera. One of the major topics is the further improvement of the corneal cross-linking technology (CXL). This treatment modality is used to treat keratoconus and infectious keratitis. CXL mechanically stiffens the cornea by cross-linking collagen fibres using vitamin B2 and UV light. The proximity to the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) is highly advantageous for future phase III clinical trials.
