Dr. Hugelshofer is a neurosurgeon-scientist with a research focus on the complex pathophysiology of secondary brain injury after hemorrhagic stroke and the aim to develop new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies to treat affected patients.

Since 2016, he has co-established an interdisciplinary scientific network to investigate the toxicity of cell-free hemoglobin in the brain with a focus on aneurismal subarachnoid hemorrhage. These research efforts revealed a pivotal role of hemoglobin-toxicity in the pathophysiology of secondary brain injury and defined delocalization of hemoglobin from the CSF into cerebrovascular vessel walls and the interstitial space of the brain as the primary step for hemoglobin’s toxic effects. In addition, their translational studies could proof the concept of intracerebroventricular haptoglobin treatment to compartmentalize and detoxify hemoglobin within the CSF compartment in clinically relevant large animal models.

His current projects focus on bench-to-bedside translation of this knowledge to diagnostic and therapeutic clinical applications in neurosurgery.
